Where Land Meets Ocean

I’ve been thinking a lot about landscape. I feel strongly that the transition between water and earth is an important image.  Prospero changes his rock-hard ways to forgive his usurper/brother and let the past flow away.

Unnatural though though thou art. Their understanding Begins to swell, and the approaching tide Will shortly fill the reasonable shore That now lies foul and muddy.

and a few pages later

For you, most wicked sir, whom to call brother Would even infect my mouth, I do forgive Thy rankest fault; all of them; and require My dukedom of thee, which perforce, I know, Thou must restore.

A “sea-change” if I ever heard one! (Sorry, pun was unavoidable!)

My initial impulse when thinking about this island looked something like this.  I vacationed in the Outer Banks recently, so sandy dunes are still lingering happily in my head.

When not vacationing in my head, realized this was NOT the coast of Malta or any other place in the Mediterranean.  The island we are seeking is a much harsher place.  No soft sand or sea oats waving gently in the breeze.  The intersection of land and sea here is a hard, rough place.  So little cover is there that Trinculo is forced to take cover under Cailiban.

Here’s neither bush nor shrub, to bear off any weather at all, and another storm brewing . . . Alas, the storm is come again! my best way is to creep under his gaberdine; there is no other shelter hereabouts: misery acquaints a man with strange bed-fellows.

So, the levels we have discussed will be rocky, nearly devoid of vegetation (making Caliban’s ability to gather fuel a critical one) and at the lower edge, tide pools.

I am very fond of the reflections in the pools in this image.

I love the colors here.Perhaps the water can change color somehow?
